Taking Action: Effectively Changing the World

Bad News

It feels like every time we wake up, our sleepy eyes are met with more tragedy. The news has been bad. Very bad. We hardly have time to process one crisis when we are bombarded by the next.

Our conversations with our friends and coworkers regurgitate the world’s problems. Our social feeds are filled with sadness and outrage.

We feel powerless…

But, we don’t have to.

Good News

Thankfully, there are some wonderful people and organizations out there that have had enough and are actively working to change the world for the better. Some of them are committed to helping whole communities- some are focused on making a positive impact by empowering one person at a time. Some, like SAFE, are attempting to do it all.

You have a choice- you can feel powerless, or you can feel inspired to DO something, even if it’s just supporting organizations actively trying to effect change.

You don’t have to sit back helplessly.

Being The Change

Here are just a few of the organizations that, like SAFE, could use your support. They are also committed to making lasting change.

C.H.A.M.P.S. Male Mentoring

C.H.A.M.P.S. Male Mentoring was created in order to provide predominantly African American and Latino young men life-skills and emotional support in order to help these youths achieve their dreams. They are actively seeking donations and applications for volunteers for their mentorship programs and events.

SEAL Legacy Foundation

The SEAL Legacy Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides support for the SEAL community. Established in 2011, they want to make sure that no one is left behind, including the families of wounded or killed SEALs. They run a guardian program, scholarship opportunities, and offer individual grants. They are also seeking donations to support their programs.

Dream Center of Tampa

Looking for opportunities to support a grass roots organization working with underprivileged youth all the way through programs that help senior citizens? Consider supporting the efforts of the Dream Center of Tampa. They regularly organize events to clean up their neighborhoods, run after school programs and host empowerment events for the local kids in East Tampa and Ybor City. You may contact them for volunteer positions, including mentorships, or donate through their website.

All Pro Dad

Statistics don’t lie- a child’s future success rate is greatly enhanced when their father is present, interactive, and supportive of the child’s growth. All Pro Dad creates opportunities for fathers to actively participate in the lives of their children. Run by the national nonprofit organization Family First, their focus is on fatherhood programs. They list several ways to get involved on their website, including the option to donate directly.

Camp Trident

Camp Trident hosts a 7-day summer camp for teenage boys, meant to inspire confidence and camaraderie with an emphasis on discipline. Young men from 13-17 years old work through activities that will teach them about team work, mindfulness and self-confidence. These life skills are designed not just to help them become strong adults in the future- it will give them the necessary background to become valuable leaders in their own communities. You can donate funds directly through their website.

Look for the Helpers

Mister Rogers once said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers- so many caring people in this world.”

Today is a great day to be the helper and change the world for the better.
